Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Outreach Program
Our outreach program’s primary purpose is the recruitment of high school students into the chemistry or biochemistry program as a major or minor at Âé¶¹´«Ã½. A secondary goal is the recruitment of high school students into Âé¶¹´«Ã½ science programs that require considerable chemistry coursework. Outreach activities also involve lower division grade school students. Various outreach activities that our faculty are involved in include:
- American Chemical Society activities that support K-12 education (Explorathon, Chemistry Olympiad, High school teacher recognition)
- Involvement with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) consortium which works to advance professional development for K-12 science teachers, motivate and mentor students, and empower parents, so students can learn and achieve at higher levels
- Inviting high school teachers and their students to sit in on actual General Chemistry lectures and participate in laboratory activities
- Inviting high school teachers and their students to attend weekly Chemistry Department science seminars
- Provide guest speakers at elementary and high schools including chemistry demonstrations
- Judging at science fairs
